Boxer card from
England

This is a tea card and was issued by Barbers Teas in 1961, already over 40 years old. The cards were issued one at a time in packets of tea. On the back of the card, it says, "This medium-sized breed is becoming increasingly popular in the U.S.A. and Britain because of its good common sense and clean appearance which make it an excellent companion and guard dog. At the end of the 19th century it was crossed with a British Bulldog and since then has become standardised in type. The dog has a broad head, short nose, and ears are usually cropped. Weight is 60-65 lbs., and height 22-24 inches."

This nice card was issued by Hornimans Tea in 1961. One was inserted into each package of tea. On the back of the card, it says, "A German dog fashioned in Munich about 70 years ago for police work from many Continental breeds and the British Bulldog. Gets his English name from his habit of starting to play or fight by striking with his front paws. Remarkably stylish and elegant considering weight and power. Most outstanding characteristic is the head, with pronounced stop and muzzle one-third of total length. Nose higher at tip than at root."

Boxer card from

This card was issued by John Player & Sons and is quite lovely. The 25 paintings used for this series were specially executed by Angela Mulliner and form a unique collection. On the back of the card, it says, "Descended from the old bull baiting breed the Bullenbeiser, but with various crosses such as Pinschers and the English Bulldog, the Boxer emerged as such at the end of the nineteenth century. But is was virtually unknown outside its native Germany until after the Second World War when, as with the German Shepherd Dog, returning servicemen were enthusiastic about the breed and it quickly caught on in both Britain and America. Often used as Police or Security dogs, many also compete in obedience Classes and Working Trials. Strongly made dogs, cheerful extroverts they make handsome guards and companions. Are usually very good with children - if the children are sturdy and boisterous! Very agile dogs they excel at jumping. Colours fawn or brindle sometimes with white markings, short shiny coat, free moving and giving an impression of controlled power the Boxer is obviously here to stay. Height 21-24 inches. Weight 62-66 lbs."

This card was supposed to be issued by John Player & Sons about 1940, however a paper shortage due to the outbreak of World War II prevented this. Fortunately, a number of the cards were printed and made available for collectors. On the back, it says, "When the cruel sport of bull-baiting was abolished in Germany, the Bullenbeisser (now extinct) rapidly lost public favour. In its place a lighter, smaller dog was bred known as the Boxer, and the No. 1 of the breed in the German Stud Book was "Flocki", a dog born in 1895. Although a few Boxers were imported from 1912 onwards, it was not until 1933 that the breed was established in this country. It is becoming increasingly popular in Britain and the U.S.A., while European Police and Military authorities use it for varied purposes including guard duties. Fawn or brindle are its accepted colourings in Great Britain."

The head should be broad with the top of the skull slightly arched. The nose should slope upwards to the tip but not as much as the Bulldog. The dark brown eyes should have dark rims."

This Golden Fleece Australia 'Swap Card' came from a set of 36 cards. The Boxer is No. 26 in the set titled "Pedigree Dogs". The back of the card has the following description: "The Boxer comes from Germany and is a clean-limbed dog of great strength and beauty. He is good-natured, clever and always dependable. Extremely useful as a war dog the Boxer also makes one of the best seeing-eye dogs for the blind people.
Boxers were sometimes used to fight wild boars and tease bulls at bull fights. This led to a belief that they were a cross of a Great Dane and the British Bulldog.

BOXER
"The appearance of the Boxer carries a strong suggestion of both mastiff and bulldog and he contains in his ancestry the forbears of both. This powerful, medium-sized, smooth-haired dog has been carefully bred in Germany for a century or more, and ois one of the most courageous, agile, fast and fearlessm of canine battlers. With his exceptional equipment for offense and defense is combined a high order of intelligence. Because of these qualities the Boxer was one of the earliest breeds to be trained for German police work. The English name of this variety has an interesting derivation. It comes from the odd mannerism of the Boxer in starting a fight, which he does by using his forepaws in a way very suggestive of a man boxing."

Premier trading cards were made for use in vending machines manufactured exclusively by the Oak Manufacturing Company, Inc. Culver City, CA. This set was made for Dr. Ballard's Pet Foods. These cards were titled simply "Dogs" and issued in 1950. The following is printed on the back of the card: "Although the Boxer has reached its greatest perfection in Germany during the past 100 years, it springs from a line of dogs that has been known throughout the whole of Europe since the 16th century.
In spite of his German ancestry, the Boxer name is obviously English. This arises from his manners of fighting, for invariably the Boxer begins a fight with his front paws, some what like a man boxing.
The Boxer has been bred in the United States for more than three decades".
