Chow Chow stamp from Abkhazia Chow Chow stamp from Komi

Since the economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation, stamps that were previously issued are not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of four "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. The Chow Chow shown above on the right is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Komi. These stamps come in a set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint. Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be printed. On the left is the stamp that was ultimately issued with the Chow image from the overprint, put out by Abkhazia in 1998. There is a second pair below from Ingushetia.

Chow Chow stamp from Afghanistan

This impressive stamp was issued by Afghanistan in 1998. I really like it, but due to recent conflicts, many dealers will not carry stamps from Afghanistan or other countries that they feel promote terrorism. It will be hard to acquire.
Afghanistan is a mountainous land-locked country located in Central Asia. It has a history and culture that goes back over 5000 years. Throughout its long, splendid, and sometimes chaotic history, this area of the world has been known by various names. In ancient times, its inhabitants called the land Aryana. In the medieval era, it was called Khorasan, and in modern times, its people have decided to call it Afghanistan. The exact population of Afghanistan is unknown, however, it is estimated to be somewhere around 21-26 million. It is slightly smaller than Texas. They have cold winters and hot summers. Some current issues are limited fresh water resources, inadequate supplies of potable water, overgrazing and deforestation. The capital is Kabul. The majority of the population continues to suffer from insufficient food, clothing, housing, and medical care, problems exacerbated by military operations and political uncertainties.

Chow Chow stamp from Altai

The collapse of the Soviet Union has created a gold mine for stamp collectors. The local governments have issued some wonderful stamps in an effort to sell them to the world market and not even have to provide the associated service of mailing letters with them. This is a real boon when you see the number of Russian stamps issued. Altai is also from the Russian block and is in southeast Western Siberia. It was noted as the largest agricultural producer in the Soviet Union.

Chow Chow stamp from Bulgaria

Probably one of the cutest stamps that we have seen in a long time, Bulgaria put out a set of "puppy" stamps in 1997 also. This Chow is especially nice. It needs to be in any Chow Chow collection.
The Bulgars, A Central Asian Turkic Tribe, merged with the local slavic inhabitants in the late 7th century to form the first Bulgarian state. In succeeding centuries, Bulgaria struggled with the Byzantine Empire to assert its place in the Balkans, but by the end of the 14th century the country was overrun by the Ottoman Turks. Bulgaria regained its independence in 1878, but having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, it fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a Peoples Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990. The country is slightly larger than Tennessee. The capital is Sofia.

Chow Chow stamp from Buriatia Chow Chow stamp from Buriatia

Buriatia is another Russian Local with recent topical stamp issues. At first, I thought that this stamp on the left looked more like a wolf, but it is definitely listed as a Chow.
Buriatia is in southern Siberia near Lake Baykal on the Mongolian border and such the Buryat people are Buddhists as well. The collapse of the Soviet Union has created a gold mine for stamp collectors. The local governments have issued some wonderful stamps in an effort to sell them to the world market and not even have to provide the associated service of mailing letters with them. This is a real boon when you see such nice examples as this stamp on the left put out by Buriatia in 1997. The one on the right was issued in 1999.

Chow Chow stamp from Cambodia

Cambodia put out an interesting set in 1997 that included this Chow Chow. I don't know why they would show him with a desert background.
Cambodia is located in southeastern Asia, bordering the Gulf of Thailand, between Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos. It is slightly smaller than Oklahoma. The climate is tropical, rainy, monsoon season (May to November); dry season (December to April; little seasonal temperature variation. The terrain is mostly low, flat plains; mountains in southwest and north. The natural hazards are the monsoonal rains; flooding; occasional droughts. The current issues are illegal logging activities throughout the contry and strip mining for gems in the western region along the border with Thailand. Ethnic groups nsist of Khmer 90%, Vietnamese 5%, Chinese 1%, and others 4%. The languages are the official Khmer 95%, French and English. The government consists of multiparty democracy under a constitutional monarchy established on September 1993. The capital is Phnom Penh.

Chow Chow stamp from Central Africa Chow Chow stamp from Central Africa

This lovely stamp on the left was issued by The Republic of Central Africa in 1997. The one on the right was just put out in 2001. Both are easily available.
Central Africa Republic (CAR), landlocked republic in central Africa, bordered on the north by Chad, on the east by Sudan, on the south by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and on the west by Cameroon. A former french colony, which became independent on August 31, 1960, the CAR was known as the Central African Empire from 1976 to 1979 under the autocratic rule of self-styled,emperor Jean Bedel Bokassa. Chow Chow stamp from Chuvasia

Chuvashia borders both of Russia’s European and Asian regions along one of the major tributaries of the Volga River. Chuvashia’s hops production and the locals’ love of beer has earned the republic the nickname of "Russia’s Bavaria." Chuvash people are Turkish; strangely they are not Muslim but Christian orthodox. Chow Chow stamp from Congo

This nice rendition of the Chow Chow was issued by the Congo in 2003.
The Congo is situated in west central Africa astride the equator. Its area is nearly three times that of Pennsylvania. Most of the inland is tropical rain. It is a dictatorship. After the Portuguese located the Congo River in 1482, commerce was carried on with the tribes, especially the slave trade. During World War II the colony joined Chad in supporting the Free French cause against the Vichy government. The Congo proclaimed its independence without leaving the French Community in 1960, calling itself the Republic of Congo.

Chow Chow stamp from Dagestan

A beautiful puppy stamp issued in the year 2000 from Dagestan.
Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages, cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place in the world. These days, however, Dagestan is going through the times of heavy unrest, both political and ethnical.

Chow Chow stamp from Equitoria Guinea Chow Chow stamp from Equitorial Guinea

These two interesting stamps were issued by Equatorial Guinea in Africa. The one with the full body image on the left was issued in 1977. The other headshot was issued in 1978. Interestingly, the Chow Chow is the only breed to have been used for both sets of dog stamps. All other breeds were different for the two sets.
Equatorial Guinea is located in Western Africa bordering the Bight of Biafra, between Cameroon and Gabon. The area is slightly smaller than Maryland. The climate is tropical, always hot and humid. The terrain: coastal plains rise to interior hills; islands are volcanic. Natural resources consist of petroleum, timber, small unexploited deposits of gold, manganese, uranium. Natural hazards; violent windstorms and flash floods.

Chow Chow stamp from Gambia

This Gambia baby can't be beat. What a wonderful portrait of a deserving breed. The Gambia is a long and narrow country in West Africa that parallels and takes in both sides of the Gambia River. It is surrounded by Senegal on all sides, except on the Atlantic coast, and for this reason the two countries have a lot of ethnic and cultural ties. In contrast to Senegal, a former French colony, The Gambia was colonized by Britain and gained its Independence on February 18, 1965. This stamp was issued in the year 2000.

Chow Chow stamp from Germany

Germany apparently put out a set of dog stamps in both 1995 and 1996. This one was in the later set. They are often available, but rather expensive.
Germany is located in Central Europe, bordering the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, between the Netherlands and Poland, south of Denmark. It is slightly smaller than Montana. The climate is temperate and marine; cool, cloudy, wet winters and summers. The terrain consists of lowlands in north, uplands in center, Bavarian Alps in south. It has natural hazards of flooding. Some current issues: emissions from coal-burning utilities and industries contribute to air pollution; acid rain, resulting from sulfur dioxide emissions, is damaging forests; pollution in the Baltic Sea form raw sewage and industrial effluents from rivers in eastern Germany. The religions: Protestant 34%. Roman Catholic 34%, Muslim 3.7% other 28.3%. The language is German. The capital is Berlin.

Chow Chow stamp from Grenada

This is a relatively recent stamp from the island country of Grenada. The series contains dogs along with a tourist attraction from their country of origin. The Chow Chow is paired with the lovely Ling Yin Monastery in China.
Grenada is described as a spice island, because it produces large quantities of cloves and mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar, bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches, especially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine, but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada is the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands, which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly 26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket.

Chow Chow stamp from Guyana

This beautiful stamp was put out by Guyana in 1997.
Guyana is a little country that lies at the point where the Caribbean meets South America on its North Atlantic seaboard. Said to be the legendary El Dorado, Guyana is the only English-speaking country located in South America. The name 'Guyana' is derived from an Amerindian word meaning; land of many waters - and indeed it is a land of many waters- with three mighty rivers and many tributaries, creeks and waterfalls.

Chow Chow stamp from Ingushetia

Ingushetia is one of the 21 Russian republics, which are the administrative units with the greatest amount of autonomy within the Russian Federation. It was part of a joint Chechen-Ingush autonomous republic from 1936 until 1991, when Chechnya declared independence and the Ingush separated from the republic. These stamps are included simply because they were the only overprints that were available in past years, in this case 1993. There were a limited number released to the outside world and then they were all gone. These scans are for historical significance only since the originals are absolute collector's items now. Be sure to get a set of the new overprints. As far as I know, there were 100 of each overprint available and the small number of those that I was able to get will be gone very quickly. The sets of overprints consist of 5 stamps each in a different background color.

Chow Chow stamp from Kalmykia

Kalmykia is a republic within the Russian Federation. The Kalmyks settled the Volga River region in the seventeenth century. A Mongol people, they were originally Buddhist in faith. Annexed to Russian in 1771, a Kalmyk Autonomous Province was created by the Bolsheviks in 1920. This was abolished during the Second World War, when, in common with many other ethnic minorities, the Kalmyks were deemed to have displayed insufficient enthusiasm for fighting for Communism. The customary mass deportations followed. An Autonomous Republic was re-established in 1958. This stamp was issued in 1999.

Chow Chow stamp from Pabay Chow Chow stamp from Pabay

These stamps were done in 1969. I don't know the story behind it -- as far as I know, Pabay is not a country. It is one of three uninhabited islands off the coast of Great Britain -- no doubt they make some of their money off of issuing topical postage stamps. Anyway, it is nice that they did a good stamp of a Chow Chow! They are rather unique specimen, and are over 30 years old. I am showing two different versions: the plain issue and then one with an overprint from the original year of issue. I don't have either of these available.

Chow Chow stamp from Paraguay

This interesting portrait was put out by Paraguay, but was actually printed in Portugal. I don't have a date on it either, but it was probably within the last couple of years. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to find.
In the disastrous War of the Triple Alliance (1865-70), Paraguay lost two-thirds of all adult males and much of its territory. It stagnated economically for the next half century. In the Chaco War of 1932-35, large economically important areas were won from Bolivia. The 35-year military dictatorship of Alfredo STROESSNER was overthrown in 1989, and, despite a marked increase in political infighting in recent years, relatively free and regular presidential elections have been held since then.
Paragury is located in Central South America, northeast of Argentina. It is slightly smaller than California. It has a subtropical to temperate climate. The capital is Asuncion. A large percentage of the population derives their living from agricultutal activity, often on a subsistence basis. Chow Chow stamp from St.
Thomas

S.Tome E.Principe did a dog set recently as well. This is their Chow Chow. It was the only recognizable dog in the group that also included a Sanshu, a Hamiltonstovare and a Spitz. I don't expect this one to be generally available since the other breeds are not marketable.
Sao Tome E Principe was discovered and claimed by Portugal in the late 15th century, the islands' sugar-based economy gave way to coffee and cocoa in the 19th century - all grown with plantation slave labor, a form of which lingered into the 20th century. Although independence was achieved in 1975, democratic reforms were not instituted until the late 1980s. Though the first free elections were held in 1991, the political environment has been one of continued instability with frequent changes in leadership and coup attempts in 1995 and 2003. The recent discovery of oil in the Gulf of Guinea is likely to have a significant impact on the country's economy. Located in Western Africa, islands in the Gulf of Guinea, straddling the Equator, west of Gabon. It is more than 5 times the size of Wahington, D.C. Chow Chow stamp from Tadjikistan

A nice Chow Chow stamp issued by Tadjikistan in 1999.
Tadjikistan plays a fascinating role in the power struggle in central Asia. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the declaration of independence by the former Soviet republics, Tadjikistan acquired national sovereignty for the first time in history. Inexperience, in conjunction with a particular clan-oriented, regional-based, political culture established the foundation for the prolonged conflict that ensued in post-Soviet Tadjikistan. The intensity of this conflict has been further fueled by the ethnic and historical externalities of the unresolved political situation in Afghanistan.
Today, Russia's interests in Tadjikistan center around preserving its economic and geopolitical position in Central Asia. These interests, however, conflict with those of the newly independent states in the region, which are focused on preventing Tadjikistan from becoming a "Russian protectorate." In this respect, resolution of the civil war in Tadjikistan is part of the broader problems of reconstituting global spheres of influence and establishing a "new world order" in the wake of the Soviet collapse.
In addition to the seemingly obvious military, strategic, and geopolitical factors, there are critical economic issues that underlie Russia's interests in retaining Tadjikistan within its sphere of influence. Tadjikistan is a mountainous country, rich in fuel and mineral deposits. Tadjikistan's potential to generate hydroelectric power is second only to Russia among CIS member states. Moreover, not so long ago, Tadjikistan was Moscow's main supplier of several minerals, as well as cotton. Finally, the country has the resources and infrastructure to become a major industrial power in the region.

Chow Chow stamp from Hong Kong
Chow Chow stamp from Hong Kong
Caribs were the first inhabitants of St. Vincent. Columbus marked the presence of the island on his third voyage in 1498, but didn't go ashore. The Caribs were tenacious, keeping the European conquistadors at bay longer than on any other island.
In 1787, Captain William Bligh set sail from England on the Bounty, bound for Tahiti. The purpose of the voyage, which ended in mutiny, was to collect breadfruit plants and transport them to St. Vincent for use as food for slaves. In 1793 Bligh eventually arrived in St. Vincent on another ship loaded with breadfruit seedlings. The fruit would make the island famous. To this day, the main export from the island is still bananas.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines achieved independence in 1979. The islands have produced many stamps over the years, including this Chow Chow Souvenir Sheet that was issued in 1994 for the Hong Kong Year of the Dog. The sheet shows Chinese junks with a wonderful Chow Chow in the bottom left corner. There four two matching sets issued with the others having different items in the three stamps, with a Chinese Crested, a Pekingese and a Shar Pei. This minisheet of three Chow Chow images from the Kuril Islands was issued in 1999.
The Kuril Islands are a chain of 56 large and small volcanic islands in far eastern Russia, extending from northeastern Hokkaido Island in Japan to southern Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. The Kurils are heavily forested and contain many active volcanoes. Both the Russians and Japanese settled the Kuril Islands in the 18th century. In 1875 Japan ceded to Russia the nearby island of Sakhalin in exchange for full Japanese possession of the Kurils. The islands were returned to the USSR by an agreement reached at the Yalta Conference during World War II (1939-1945). After the war Japan maintained a claim to the southernmost islands, and the territorial dispute prohibited the countries from signing a peace treaty. That dispute has not been settled to this day.

An awesome souvenir sheet issued to commemorate the 'Year of the Dog' in Hong Kong, February, 1994. What a wonderful sheet with the Chow Chow representing the "Dog".
To this day, bananas are the main export from the island.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines achieved independence in 1979. The islands have produced many stamps over the years, including this Chow Chow from St.Vincent & Grenadines 1994.

Chow Chow stamp from Nanjing China

This is truly the prize of the collection. I bought this expensive set for the Borzoi caricature stamp in it. The other two great stamps were of the Chow Chow and the Old English Sheepdog (some of the set were unidentifiable as far a breeds are concerned.) I have never seen another set or individual stamp from the set. It is a non-perf, meaning that it has smooth edges and is not perforated. I was a bit mystified as to its origin. Then I found out that it was not a postage stamp. The set was made as give-away prizes in matchboxes somewhat like the prizes in Crackerjacks! That was when I discovered the great possibilities in collecting matchbox covers like the three above. This one was mounted with gold leaf and has a wonderful new home.

(for locally, or out of the US: (512) 280-1867) for current availability.

* We can take visa/mc/disc or a check, but they are first come first served, so let me know if you are interested.

* We do have discounts if you want to buy more than one.

* We have a couple of copies of some of these cards, and since they are much more fun when you have a "set", we would be happy to give a discount for multiple purchases. This can make a set of interesting breed cards quite reasonable. Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
